RecycleBC Update: COVID-19

Message from Recycle BC

As you are likely aware, Recycle BC currently provides curbside recycling services directly in Spallumcheen. Emterrra Environmental is our contracted collection partner in RDNO.

In light of the current COVID-19 situation, we wanted to provide some information on our operations and the importance of communication in the coming weeks. Recycle BC continues to operate at full capacity and has instituted plans to maintain the continuity of our management of the program. The safety of everyone involved with the Recycle BC program is paramount and this includes everyone who works in our collection and post-collection networks.

We have been in touch with our collection partner for your area and are actively engaged in contingency planning and developing procedures in the event of a disruption in their ability to provide service. While they continue to operate at or near full capacity, we may be required to

suspend or adjust collection schedules in the event of staffing shortages, safety concerns, receiving facility closures etc. As this is a rapidly evolving situation, it is possible that closures and contingency plans may need to be executed with very little turnaround time.

In the event of service disruptions, we will do our best to communicate these changes directly to residents, including through service alerts to subscribers to our app. We would also appreciate the opportunity to work with your communications staff to leverage your communications in the interest of reaching the broadest number of people possible.  If collection is suspended, we will be encouraging residents to save their recyclables until further direction can be provided. In this scenario, we will not encourage residents to bring their materials to their local depots, as these locations may also be experiencing changes/disruptions to their usual service and many do not have the capacity to absorb curbside volumes.

The key throughout this situation is to maintain open lines of communication. We will be in touch with you directly on any major updates, and particularly in the case of a need to suspend or amend recycling collection. If you are not the correct contact to receive these updates, please let us know who we should contact.

Likewise, we would greatly appreciate it if you could keep us apprised of any major developments on your end, particularly of any consideration or decision to suspend or adjust garbage and/or green waste collection. It will be very helpful if our messaging to residents is aligned as much as possible, and we are working together to consider the impact on each other’s respective services when making related decisions.

If there are any other departments or staff members in your municipality that should be aware of this, please pass this message on to them (and if you do not mind, provide me with their contact details for any future communications). If you have any questions on this issue, would like to discuss further or have an applicable update, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation at this time.
