Changes to Open Air Burning

It is the responsibility of each person within the Township of Spallumcheen to review, understand and adhere to the Township of Spallumcheen Fire Prevention Bylaw 1909, 2016 – Consolidated for Convenience (Amendment Bylaw No. 1973, 2019) prior to any open burning. 


The following summary is provided for ease of reference only

 Open air burning of Non-compostable vegetation is PERMITTED in the Township of Spallumcheen from November 1 each year to April 30 of the following year unless a fire ban has been issued by the Fire Chief. 

 Please note open burning is explicitly PROHIBITED in the Residential R1 and R5 Zones (Residential Single Family & Residential Manufactured Home Community).

 ONLY the following materials may be burned:

  • Untreated wood

  • Prunings

  • Branches

  • Tree stumps & trunks

  • Shrubs

  • Right to Farm Act Burning

Residents are required to:

  • Educate themselves on the current open burning & campfire regulations,

  • Always have a competent person in charge at all times and until the fire is completely extinguished,

  • have all the tools to control the fire available until the fire is completely extinguished (water, shovel, etc.),

  • consult Environment Canada’s venting index or forecast for our region at or by calling the following number at 1-888-281-2992 prior to starting a fire. Open burning can only be conducted when the index is at 55-100.

Campfires are permitted in all land use zones of Spallumcheen provided there isn’t a campfire ban issued in our area and the following requirements are met:

  • no larger than 0.5 meters in height and 0.5 meters in width,

  • contained in a non-combustible base with edging to be used for cooking, recreational or ceremonial purposes, and

  • burn dry untreated wood only.

  • Individual Manufactured Home Parks may have regulations that may prohibit campfires - Please Contact your Park Manager.

Fire Bans including Campfire Bans must be followed – no exceptions. Information can be obtained by contacting the Municipal Office at 250-546-3013 or on the Township website at  

Persons in violation of the Township’s burning regulations may be subject to Municipal Ticket Information fines up to $2,000.00.
